The CDC recently confirmed six cases of Zika virus-linked birth defects in the contiguous United States. That means that at least six babies were born, miscarried, or aborted due to Zika-related birth defects within the United States, and that’s not including U.S. territories, where that number is undoubtedly higher.
Localized Zika Virus Concern
The affected women were infected with the Zika virus all by travel to areas already heavily affected by the virus.
Although there isn’t currently enough cases to declare that there are localized outbreaks of the Zika virus within, say, the Greater Houston area, the CDC does expect localized outbreaks of the Zika virus to occur throughout the U.S. during this summer, which is undoubtedly prime mosquito season.
That being said, the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico does currently have a Zika virus epidemic.“Unfortunately I think it is not surprising. I think it is consistent with what we have seen in Brazil and Colombia,” said the CDC’s Dr. Denise Jamieson, who is heading up the agency watch on Zika-affected pregnancies.
